Background

AdTool is an internal ad management and reporting platform. Ads across the network are uploaded, approved, allocated to spots and continuously analyzed for conversion optimization. The platform was originally built in 2008 and did not receive much attention over the years. The system’s lack of speed, outdated features and erroneous data caused users to only use a fraction of the feature and content available to them.

Goals & Rational

  • Improve report loading times
  • Reduce steps and completion time from initial ad creation to final ad approval
  • Eliminate any redundancies in content and functionality

The team set out to build a coherent system with improved platform performance and an optimized user experience. By doing so, we hoped to reduce user frustrations with time-consuming daily operations that impacted their productivity and job satisfaction. Improvements through a user-centred design process would reduce friction in the ad creation workflow, provide more thorough compliance oversight and increase the ability to optimize overall ad revenue.

Direct access to internal users and management allowed a fruitful partnership to develop a more focused objective oriented workflow based on user needs.


Less Is More

A series of informal usability studies with interactive prototypes and subsequent cycles of iterative improvements refined the tool down to an essential base structure.


Design Specs

All refined interactions were fleshed out through usability sessions and specced out with engineering to help facilitate smooth collaboration during development.


Style Guide

We created a new style guide leveraging a front-end web framework to allow parallel work streams and speed up overall development time.


Results

Rebuilding the system brought report loading times within an acceptable range and relieved major pain points for users. The redesigned user-centered solution reduced the platform down to only the essential components by streamlining workflows and eliminating redundancies. We delivered a simpler and more powerful tool that truly excited users as they now had a greater opportunity to maximize their business goals.
